What is physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is a sector of healthcare focused on restoring or maintaining your mobility and improving physical performance, focusing on movement, function, flexibility, strength, and more. It can include managing pain, encouraging recovery post-surgery, and treating injuries or conditions.

People often seek physio services for:

  • Ongoing pain
  • Sports injuries
  • General sprains, pulls, and muscle tears
  • Joint pain and stiffness
  • Broken bones
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Chronic conditions such as arthritis
  • Neurological conditions affecting mobility
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction

If your movements are restricted, painful, or otherwise affected by an injury or medical condition, physiotherapy can likely help. It is for people of all ages and mobility levels.

Our physiotherapy services in Takanini

Physiotherapy

Our comprehensive physiotherapy services involve:

  • determining the type and extent of an injury or condition
  • providing hands-on treatment
  • coming up with a plan for rehabilitation or recovery
  • ongoing injury prevention

Acupuncture

Based on traditional Chinese medicine practice, acupuncture is used to treat a lot of different conditions including pain, nausea, and stress. It is often used alongside other treatments to complement them.

Acupuncture involves stimulating the nervous system with thin needles. It is safe when administered by a licensed practitioner.

All our acupuncturists are members of the CMCNZ and integrate evidence-based acupuncture into their practice for the benefit of the patient.

Massage therapy

While we don’t have a dedicated massage therapist onsite, it’s possible to add massage therapy as a treatment option with a physiotherapist or acupuncturist.

Telehealth consultations

Video call consultations with licensed physiotherapists allow us to offer services remotely. While hands-on treatments like massage and acupuncture can not be administered, a physio can offer diagnosis, treatment plans, and expert advice for those seeking remote rehabilitation.

Service costs and ACC funding

We offer both ACC-funded physio and private physiotherapy, making our services available and accessible to all who need them.

ACC covers necessary treatment for anyone injured in an accident in New Zealand, citizens and visitors alike. This is no-fault cover, and can be accessed with a referral from your doctor or directly through our clinic for an eligible injury.

Injuries that are non-accidental or caused by existing or age-related conditions are not covered by ACC. We have affordable private physiotherapy sessions available.

ACC-funded physiotherapy costs

The following prices are for ACC-funded treatment. Whether or not your treatment will be funded can be quickly determined through an initial consultation.

  • ACC Initial: $35.00
  • ACC FU: $30.00
  • CSC/GC Initial: $25.00
  • CSC/GC FU: $20.00

Private physiotherapy costs

Our privately-funded physiotherapy costs are straightforward and based on the length of a session. For Southern Cross members, Easy-Claim is a convenient way to claim for our eligible services when you purchase them, without having to complete a claim form first – we want to make the process as simple as possible.

  • 30 min – $60.00
  • 45 min – $85.00

Do you need physiotherapy? Symptoms and pre-assessment

Wondering whether physio services would be of benefit to you? Here are a few of the considerations to take into account when deciding whether or not to access physiotherapy.

Symptoms in adults

Common issues in adults that indicate a need for rehabilitation include:

  • Ongoing pain after a sports or general life injury.
  • Pain in joints
  • Pain that’s restricting mobility
  • Back pain
  • Enduring concussion symptoms

Symptoms in children

Issues and injuries in children that could benefit from physiotherapy include:

  • Developmental concerns
  • Injuries that are restricting mobility
  • Injuries causing ongoing pain
  • Postural issues

Pre-assessment: 5 questions to ask yourself

The best way to know whether you or your child need physio services is to ask your doctor or seek a consultation with a physiotherapist. However, there are a few questions you can ask yourself (or ask your child directly/on their behalf) to get a good idea before that point.

  • Do I have ongoing or recurring pain?
  • Is the injury or condition affecting day-to-day life, or stopping me from usual activities?
  • Is my range of motion affected?
  • Am I recovering from a surgical procedure and seeking the best possible outcome?
  • Am I having trouble with balance or co-ordination?

If you’ve answered yes to one or more of these questions, it might be time to get in touch with Geneva Physio Takanini.

Booking an appointment and next steps

Booking an appointment at our physio in Takanini is easy.

How to book a physiotherapy appointment

You can make a booking online: simply click the “Make a booking” button below and follow the steps laid out. If you prefer a phone call, you can reach us on 09 299 1358 to make an appointment.

What to expect at your first appointment

Your first appointment will begin with an initial assessment, so your physiotherapist can get a clear idea of your injury and condition and what is needed for rehabilitation and recovery.

From there, a treatment plan will be determined. There will be opportunities for you to ask questions and have them answered before any treatment commences.

Depending on the type and duration of your initial appointment, you may begin treatment. You may also be provided with exercises or stretches to carry out at home.
