We’re pleased to share some exciting news. Girls’ Flight Out has been selected for its World Premiere at the 2026 Doc Edge Festival.
Doc Edge is New Zealand’s Oscar-qualifying international documentary festival, and one of the most respected platforms for documentary storytelling in Aotearoa. This year’s festival runs across Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and online through its Virtual Cinema platform.
At Geneva Healthcare, we supported Girls’ Flight Out, a short documentary following wāhine from Rēkohu / the Chatham Islands as they travel to mainland Aotearoa for breast screening.
What might sound like a routine health appointment is anything but. For these women, it means planning, travel, time away from home, and doing it together. In that shared experience, something special unfolds – laughter, connection, resilience, and a real sense of sisterhood.
The film spends just as much time in the in-between moments as it does at the appointment itself – early starts, airport waiting rooms, conversations along the way. It’s often in these moments that it feels most real.
That’s why we supported it.
Because access to healthcare isn’t experienced equally. For rural and remote communities across Aotearoa, barriers can be practical, persistent, and not always visible. Girls’ Flight Out brings that into view, while also holding space for the strength, humour, and courage of the women at its centre.
More than anything, this project exists because people believed in it – the wāhine who shared their stories, the filmmakers who shaped it with care, and everyone who helped bring it to life.
The World Premiere will screen in Auckland from 24 June – 12 July at The Capitol Cinema and Takapuna Beachside Cinemas, before heading to Wellington and Christchurch later in July. It will also be available nationwide through the festival’s Virtual Cinema platform.
