Navigating dementia together

At Geneva Healthcare, we’re proud to partner with Dementia New Zealand and help whānau access information through Dementia Navigator – a free online education hub designed to help people learn more about dementia.

A dementia diagnosis (mate wareware) tends to bring a lot with it: questions, worry, uncertainty. For the person diagnosed, as well as the people who love them, it can feel like everything shifts at once.

We see this every day. And one thing that stands out time and time again is this: support isn’t just about practical care. It’s about having somewhere to turn for clear information, reassurance, and guidance – especially on the harder days.

That’s why we’re proud to support the work of Dementia New Zealand, an organisation providing education and support for people living with dementia, their care partners, and whānau across Aotearoa. Through this, we’re helping more people find and access the free resources already available to them.

A simple place to begin

Dementia New Zealand’s Dementia Navigator is a free online education hub designed to help people make sense of dementia, one step at a time.

It brings together practical, easy-to-understand information for people living with dementia, whānau, care partners, and health professionals. It’s self-paced, so people can dip in and out whenever it suits them.

The platform has been designed to be simple and intuitive to use, so people can focus on learning without unnecessary complexity or confusion. Because it’s fully online, it can be accessed at any time that works for the user – whether that’s a quiet moment during the day or at night when questions often come up.

Once registered, users receive 12 months of full access, along with downloadable PDF resources they can keep and revisit even after completing the modules.

The content has been developed with input from New Zealand’s leading researchers, clinicians, neuroscientists, and members of the dementia care community. This helps ensure it reflects current best practice and real-world experience.

The learning modules cover a range of key topics, including:

  • What dementia is and how it can affect people differently
  • What a diagnosis may mean and what comes next
  • Planning ahead and accessing support early
  • The different types of dementia
  • Changes in behaviour and communication
  • Practical tools, videos, and downloadable resources

It’s been designed to feel supportive and manageable, rather than overwhelming.

Helping whānau feel more prepared

One of the hardest parts of dementia is the uncertainty of what comes next.

When things feel uncertain, having access to clear, reliable information can make a real difference. It can help people feel a little steadier as they navigate conversations, decisions, and the gradual changes that may come over time.

Dementia Navigator is available online whenever it’s needed, which means support is there in the moments people often need it most — whether that’s late at night after a difficult day, or in those early weeks following a diagnosis when everything still feels unfamiliar.

Alongside the learning modules, Dementia New Zealand also offers free webinars and additional resources for people who want to explore further or revisit topics at their own pace.

Ultimately, the goal is simple: to help ensure no whānau has to walk this journey alone.

Care that’s shaped around the person

Dementia care is never one-size-fits-all. At Geneva Healthcare, we always focus on the person – their routines, their independence, their preferences, and what matters most in their day-to-day life.

Our teams provide in-home support that can range from companionship and help around the home through to more complex care needs. We work alongside whānau to make sure care feels consistent, respectful, and shaped around the individual.

Through this work, we’re also helping connect people with Dementia New Zealand’s resources alongside practical, hands-on care that whānau can draw on at any stage.

Where to find support

If you or someone you love is navigating a dementia diagnosis, you don’t have to go through it alone. Support, information and guidance are available when you need them – and there are different places you can turn to at different stages of the journey.
